Specifications
Same machine, different names. A brush hog, a bush hog, a rotary cutter, a 3 point brush cutter and a brush mower are all the same thing: a PTO-driven deck that hangs off a tractor's three point hitch and cuts heavy material a finish mower cannot touch. Bush Hog started as a brand name and became the word most people use. Rotary cutter is what the manufacturers call it. Brush Thrasher is what we call ours.
Which width for your tractor? The Brush Thrasher comes in 60, 66, 72 and 78 inch cutting widths and is rated for 35 to 75 horsepower on a Category 1 three point hitch. Wider decks cover more ground per pass but need more power at the PTO and more tractor behind them to stay stable on a slope. If you are at the lower end of that horsepower range, take the 60 inch. If you are running a utility tractor toward the top of it and mowing open pasture or roadside, the 72 or 78 inch will finish the job in fewer passes.
What it will and will not cut. The Brush Thrasher cuts and mulches grass, weeds, brush and saplings up to 3 inches in diameter. The Stump Jumper blade carrier lets the blades ride over rocks and stumps instead of stopping dead on them, and the slip clutch protects the gear box and your tractor's PTO shaft when they do. An adjustable tail wheel holds the cutting height where you set it. This is a brush cutting machine, not a finish mower: it will clear a neglected field, it will not leave a lawn finish.
